Fish: Meat or Not?

“Do you want your meat in a separate bag?”

“That’s not meat; it’s fish.”

“Ok…do you want it in a separate bag?”

“Yes, of course.”

I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve had this conversation, or a similar one, with customers.  Today it went even further.  The customer in question informed me that he did not eat meat, as I put his fish in a separate bag for him.  He then proceeded to ask me if I ate meat and when I said “yes” he asked me what kind.  I replied with “all kinds.”  I have nothing against vegetarians and vegans.  I have friends who are both.  But it drives me nuts when customers insist that fish is not meat.  My definition of meat is that it is the flesh of an animal.  Fish are animals.  Therefore their flesh is meat.  Dictionary.com agrees with my definition, stating that meat is “the flesh of animals as used for food.”

Although the fact that the customers are wrong about the definition of meat is not even what bothers me the most.  What I dislike the most about that conversation is the fact that it does not help me to know whether they want their fish in a separate bag.  All I want is a yes or a no.

What do you think?  Is fish meat?

Latkes and Bacon

For as long as I can remember, it has been a tradition of my family to have bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches on Christmas Eve.  I actually don’t like bacon, so I just put cheese on mine.  But everyone else eats them.

The other day, my mom decided she would make latkes (potato pancakes) for Hanukkah.  We usually have them for dinner one night during Hanukkah.  Her original plan was to have them last night, but that didn’t work out.  I was working until 5 (and I was going to buy the potatoes and onions to make the latkes) and my bro had to be somewhere at 6.  So, the timing didn’t work.

Then we came up with the idea to have them tonight, on Christmas Eve, along with the BLT sandwiches.  It’s a rather funny combination of foods.  Bacon is definitely not kosher.  So, we’re having Jewish food along with bacon.  Maybe it’ll become a new tradition.  It would certainly fit our mix of religions.

Disgusting

I had a relatively good 4th of July.  Well, it was good once I got out of work.  Work was utterly insane the entire day, what with people buying twenty packages of hot dogs, ten cases of beer, etc.  I had not seen the store that busy since the weekend before Christmas.

After I was done with work, I headed over to my neighbor’s house with my family for their party.  It was fun and there was a lot of good food to eat.  I probably gained 5 lbs over the course of a couple hours.

However, as I was standing around talking to my siblings and playing this game, I inhaled a gnat.  It was thoroughly nasty.  I probably inhale multiple gnats each year, but this one was particularly gross because I could feel it going down.  Thus is the curse of living where I do.

Peeps

Every year the local newspaper has this contest where you make a diorama out of Peeps. I’ve never entered before, but this year my siblings and I decided to do it. We made Professor Snape’s Potions class. It was fun to make. We made it entirely out of food. The cauldrons are these little brownies they sell where I work. We gouged out the insides of them and put melted marshmallow with food coloring in them to be potion.

But we didn’t win. Oh, well. Here are some pics.

We also dyed some Easter eggs. I made a Gryffindor one, a Slytherin one, and a duck one using this plastic thing that you put around the egg.

And at work last night, I bought some cheap Easter candy. I love when all the candy goes on sale. All the bulk Easter candy was 99 cents a pound, so I got a pound of that. Plus a couple truffle filled chocolate eggs that were only 89 cents down from $7. Good deal.

Sushi

Ever since work last night I’ve wanted some sushi. I worked in the cafe section of the store last night and a lot of people bought sushi. I love vegetable sushi. I’ve never tried the kind with raw fish, it just doesn’t appeal to me. So for dinner tonight we went to a Chinese buffet and I got some sushi. I had the kind with cream cheese, carrots, and cucumber. It was yummy. I also had beef with broccoli, sweet and sour chicken, and lo mein. And my fortune was ‘you are patient and caring’. LOL, I’m definitely not the most patient person in the world.
