I Don’t Really Get It

I just finished reading The Great Gatsby which I had to read for my English class.  I had heard a lot of good things about this book and was looking forward to reading a good book after the previous book, The Ladies’ Paradise, which wasn’t good at all.

But, I have to admit that I just don’t get the appeal of The Great Gatsby. Honestly, I found it rather confusing.  It took me half a chapter to realize that Jay Gatsby wasn’t the one narrating the novel.  It also kind of seemed to be all over the place, as far as settings went.  It would switch from one setting to the next, without really letting the reader know.  Then there was the ending.  That confused the hell out of me.  Did Gatsby kill Wilson or not?  I didn’t even realize that Gatsby had been killed, until someone mentioned his funeral.

Well, now I can say that I’ve read it, but I can’t say I’ll read it again.  I have found that most of these classic books are not really ones that I enjoy.

  1. Oh, you know. I have to read that book by the end of this semester. Maybe I won’t “read” it after all. :P

  2. I can’t remember.. hhaha. Use Sparknotes?

  3. Ack! Sorry you didn’t like it. Gatsby didn’t kill her, it was Daisy.

  4. I have to read it soontimes.

  5. I sparknoted (if that’s a word) it. I know Daisy killed Myrtle Wilson. I was confused about whether or not Gatsby killed Mr. Wilson. Turns out, Mr. Wilson killed Gatsby and then killed himself. That could have been more clearly stated in the book.

But you know what gets me? My teacher decided to give us a hard quiz since a lot of the class had already read the book in another class. I, however, had not, so this wasn’t really fair. And you know what one of the questions was? ‘What was the make of Gatsby’s car?’ How is that possibly relevant? What does it matter what kind of car he had?! I got that one wrong.

  6. way to spoil it, sarah! lol
